Overview of WiSen

WiSen is an Irish Government supported initiative. It comprises a network of organisations drawn from industry, third-level research institutes and government agencies who share a common vision of the importance of wireless sensor networks in Ireland’s future economy and shaping our future society, and are united in a common desire to promote wireless sensor network research, development and successful commercialisation.

WiSen believes advances in sensors, low power radio and networking standards are enabling the introduction of new, commercially attractive wireless sensor network (WSN) products in many areas, driven by the ability of WSN systems to provide significant benefits including cost reduction, increased efficiency, health & safety compliance and ability to meet regulatory requirements. Commercial WSNs are being deployed now in areas such as advanced metering, energy & demand management, security & asset tracking, food safety and environmental monitoring, with advanced automotive and healthcare applications expected to follow soon.

WiSen aims to promote and implement its vision of leading-edge WSN commercial and research activity in Ireland on a significant scale, leading to increased exports and jobs. This includes the establishment of an active and effective WSN ecosystem in Ireland, including research, industry, funding and support organisations.

WiSen’s mission is to stimulate co-operation between industry and academia in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) technologies, systems and large scale, practical deployments. This includes:

  • Developing and commercialising technology through funded Industry-Led Research.
  • Establishing WSN demonstrator projects, involving 1,000s of nodes, which address the practical and operational issues needed for commercial success.
  • Tracking market needs, new product opportunities & technology requirements, and disseminating information on emerging WSN technologies.
  • Facilitating networking between customers, partners, end-users, product suppliers, technology developers and external organisations.
  • Carrying out networking activities to support the development and growth of a thriving WSN ecosystem in Ireland.
